What is cosmetic dermatology?
Cosmetic dermatology is a branch of dermatologic medicine that focuses on improving a patient’s appearance. It involves the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of skin conditions that affect a person’s appearance.
What conditions are normally treated?
The most common skin conditions include sun damage or photoaging, acne scars, melisma or hyperpigmentation, rosacea or redness, unwanted hair and excess fat. Most of these skin conditions are easily diagnosed by skin inspection. There are many treatments methods for removing or minimizing the effects of these skin problems.
What tools are used in treatment?
Some of the tools used in cosmetic dermatology to treat skin conditions include lasers, radiofrequency, intense pulsed light (IPL), chemical peels, liposuction, fillers like Radiesse and Juvederm, Botox and Dysport, cosmeceuticals and medications. These treatments should be tailored to each patient’s needs.
Conditions & Treatments overview:
Sun damage has adverse effects on the skin and it is responsible for most visible signs of aging. Depending on the skin type, the age of the patient and the amount of aging, some of the effective treatments for sun damage include fillers and Botox, chemical peels, IPL photo facials, topical treatments like retinoids, erbium and CO2 laser resurfacing. Of course prevention is important through sun avoidance and the use of sunscreen.
Acne can be treated with many topical and oral medications but once scarring has already occurred, the treatment involves chemical peels and lasers.
Both melasma and rosacea are chronic conditions but with the right treatment by professional cosmetic dermatologists, they can be controlled.
Treating melasma is quite difficult. Unlike hyperpigmentation which can be treated with Intense Pulsed Light, chemical peels and Flaxel, melisma has no definite cure. It requires constant maintenance. Treatments for melisma can include bleaching, chemical peels or Flaxel. For patients with concurrent scars, wrinkles or lines, Flaxel is the best treatment option. Usually, three treatments will be required in one month. It is best to consult a cosmetic dermatologist to help you determine the right treatment option for your case.
Rosacea on the other hand responds well to Intense pulsed light (IPL) as well as tropical treatments.
Cellulite is yet another skin condition that affects a high number of people especially women. It can be improved with liposuction procedures as well as radiofrequency treatments. Today, excess fat has exciting treatment methods such as zerona laser, coolsculpting, vaser ultrasonic liposuction, smartlipo laser liposuction.
Unwanted hair usually respond to laser treatments and IPL. Hair loss on the other hand can be corrected with hair transplantation procedures.
